Gv connect Logo

The latest update for Andreas Amann’s GV Connect app was made available in the App Store yesterday. If you are not familiar with GV Connect, it allows you to place calls using your Google Voice number rather than your mobile number as well as send and receive text messages from your Google Voice number for free. With the app, you can interact with your Google Voice account from your iPhone or iPad without having to logon to the Web site. I find it to be quite a handy app, especially seeing that I use Google Voice for all my texting. I also like the ability to listen to my voice mail messages right from my device.

This new version (1.9.3) adds the new “iPhone Dialer” calling method for the iPhone, which allows you to place calls using your iPhone’s number as the Caller ID. It also fixes a couple of bug issues.

You can check out the App in the App Store HERE

If you’re not familiar with Google Currents, it’s Google’s answer to Flipboard. It delivers content from publisher editions such as TechCrunch, The Guardian, Popular Science, The Atlantic, and more – as well as your Google Reader subscriptions into stunning magazine-like editions for your iPad, which you can read offline. You also have the ability to include trending articles in a variety of topics using Google’s search technology.

Today’s update includes the following enhancements:

Sync iOS with iTunes via Wi-Fi

ITunes 10.5 and IOS5 introduce the ability to sync your IOS device over Wi-Fi. This can be accomplished from your iOS device.

To sync your iOS device with iTunes:

1.  Open Settings in your IOS device.

2.  Select “General”

3.  Click the Sync Now button to begin synching.

Now if the button is grayed out you will be unable to initiate a sync.  There could be a couple of reasons for this:

You must be running Mac OSX Lion or Snow Leopard 10.6.8

If you are running an earlier version of Snow Leopard than 10.6.8, you will need to upgrade your software to 10.6.8 or Lion.

You must be running iTunes 10.5 or later

Select iTunes > About iTunes from the menu to ensure that your version is at least 10.5.  If you are running an earlier version, choose Software Update from the Apple menu and choose any recommended updates to iTunes.

You need to make sure that Wi-Fi syncing is enabled

To enable Wi-Fi synching, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your IOS device to your Mac using a USB Cable.
  2. Open iTunes and select the name of your device under Devices, in the left pane.

  3. Click the Summary tab

  4. Under the Options area, click the check box next to “Sync with this iPad (or iPhone) over Wi-FiSync with this iPad over Wi-Fi option

Make sure that your Firewall is not preventing you from syncing

Check your firewall settings to make sure that they are not interfering with your ability to sync.  You may have to modify your settings a bit.  To do so, follow the directions HERE if you are using the Mac OS X firewall.  If you are using a third-party firewall, follow the directions of the manufacturer.

Restart iTunes and your iOS device

Sometimes simply restarting iTunes or your iPhone/iPad will solve the problem.
