Whenever I’m feeling stressed out, I find that spending time in nature – whether it be a long walk along a quiet beach or hiking along a deserted path in the forest – can really sooth the frayed edges of the nerves. If you happen to live in the Midwest in January or else live a considerable distance from such a serene place however, then the next best thing is the Naturspace App.
Naturespace provides relaxing ambient soundtracks utilizing the soothing sounds of nature. You can choose from a variety of themes: waves, rain, campfires, the beach, wolves, night at the lake, birds, wind, rivers, trains and much, much more. One of my favorites is the sound of the crashing waves onto the beach which provides a calming, relaxing experience, especially when there’s a snowstorm howling outside.
Each Naturespace track (which averages about 12 minutes, with many of them over 30 minutes long) loops continuously with no gaps between looping (or at least as far as I can tell) so you can listen for as long as you like with no interruptions.
The app uses a 3D Holographic audio engine which creates an immersive feeling of “being there” for the users. As such, one gets the feeling that the sound is coming from all around you while when listening to a track. The sound can be optimized for earbuds or headphones by tapping on the earbud icon on the bottom of the screen to toggle earbud optimization on or off.
I find Naturespace especially good for meditation as well as for providing a continuous non-distracting background sound for when I’m doing full-focus work. I also find that putting on a gentle soundtrack at bedtime helps me fall asleep with much greater ease. I’ve also heard that it also aids in drowning out ringing in the ears. Tap the Settings cog icon to toggle on a built-in Sleep Timer, which automatically turns of the soundtrack after a specified amount of time.
The free version comes with six tracks but there are over 100 additional tracks you can add as an in-app purchase, most ranging from $1.99 to $2.99. I’ve purchased many of them since I first downloaded the app and couldn’t be more pleased. The store groups soundtracks into collections, helping you to find the type of sounds you’re looking for quickly and many collections offer a discounted price if you purchase the entire group. I purchased the Wave collections and enjoyed considerable savings.
To play a soundtrack, simply tap its name on the main screen. Tap it again to toggle it off. If you end up purchasing several soundtracks, you may find the Playlist feature helpful. To view playlists, swipe to the left on any track. A small window appears on the right side of the screen from where you can create new playlists and access your existing playlists. To add soundtrack to a playlist, tap and drag the soundtrack from the list to the desired playlist.
Naturespace is available as a free download on the App Store. It is also available on the Window and Android platforms.
