Zite is an interactive magazine for iOS (both iPhone and iPad) that has slowly become my number one choice for reading new content on the Web. With so much information out there, it’s difficult to find content that you are interested it. That’s where Zite comes in.
When you launch Zite for the fist time, it asks you to choose your interests; that is to say, topics that you might be interested in reading about. Once you’ve made your selections, Zite uses that information to match stories to your personal tastes, resulting in a highly relevant curated feed.
Your articles are displayed in beautiful magazine-like format. To view an entire article, tap the desired article pane. If you like the subject matter and the article, click the thumbs up icon. A small panel appears on the bottom of the screen, prompting you to like specific aspects or categories related to the article (topic, author, etc.). Click the heart icon to the category to “like” it. This helps Zite to curate better content for you in the future – the more times you use the thumbs up feature, the better. By doing so, Zite learns your interests and gets smarter as you use it. Of course, if you dislike the content of an article, click the thumbs down button.
You can filter your content even further by displaying only a specific category from the interests you’ve chosen. Tab the menu icon on the top right corner of the screen and then tap Profile. A list of all your interests displays in a panel. Tap the interest you wish to view — now only articles related to that category will be displayed.
While reading an article in Zite, you can use the one click sharing feature to share an article among a variety of different services: Instapaper, Google+, Pocket, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Evernote. Additionally, you can text or email an article to someone or open the link in Safari.
If your interests change over time, you can update them from within the app at any time by tapping the menu icon on the top right corner of the screen and then tapping Explore More Topics. For here, tap on the topics that interest you.
The best part, is that Zite is completely free. What’s more, the company has just been purchased by Flipboard, another popular personal magazine app. There will no doubt be some exciting changes ahead for Zite.
