A handy and often unused feature of TextEdit is the ability to add tables into your documents. If you use TextEdit as your main word processing application, then you might find this feature helpful for aligning data in columnar format or organizing data neatly in rows and columns. Many people prefer to use tables rather than setting tabs as they can be easier to work with.
In order for this to work, your text edit document needs to be in Rich Text format rather than Plain Text format. You can quickly convert a Text Edit document to rich text by choosing Format > Make Rich Text from the menu. If you wish to make Rich Text format the default for TextEdit, choose TextEdit > Preferences from the menu and under the Format area, click the radio button next to Rich Text.
Quick Guide: To Create a Table in TextEdit
- If necessary, choose Format > Make Rich Text to convert the document to Rich Text Format.
- Choose Format > Table from the menu.
- Use the row and columns selectors to specify the number of rows and columns or type them in manually in the boxes.
- To change the format of your table, drag-select the cells you want to format and then choose the desired options from the Formatting toolbar or from the Format menu.
- To merge two or more cells together, drag-select the cells you want to merge, select Format > Table from the menu and then click the Merge Cells button.
- To apply shading to cells, drag-select the cells you want to merge, select Format > Table from the menu, click the Shading button and then choose the color you want from the Colors palette. Then, choose the color you want from the palette.
